Biography
Michael Broening works as a producer, pianist, and songwriter whose crossover jazz and pop approach has made him a sought-after figure in contemporary music. He opened his B-Hive studio in 2001 and has since contributed to multiple contemporary jazz successes, among them several chart-topping smooth jazz tracks recorded by Cindy Bradley, Kayla Waters, Lin Rountree, and additional artists. Broening also appeared on and produced the 2006 George Benson and Al Jarreau singles “Bring It on Home to Me” and the Grammy-winning “Mornin’.” In 2024 he issued his first solo project, Never Too Late, which included the number one jazz singles “The Way She Moves,” “Talk to Me,” and “Let It Breathe.”
Born in Los Angeles, California, Broening first gained notice during the late ’90s and opened his Phoenix-based B-Hive recording studio in 2001. His session and production credits include work with Wayman Tisdale, Marion Meadows, Nick Colionne, Michael Lington, Kim Scott, and numerous others. Among the most notable of these efforts, he produced and performed on the 2006 George Benson and Al Jarreau album Givin’ it Up, which featured the Grammy-winning track “Mornin’” as well as “Bring it on Home to Me,” the latter also containing a contribution from Paul McCartney. He likewise produced and performed on trumpeter Cindy Bradley’s 2009 album Bloom, an effort that earned her the Contemporary Jazz New Artist of the Year Award. In his roles as writer and producer, Broening has helped create at least six number one Smooth Jazz Chart singles: Kayla Waters’ “Full Bloom” (Coevolve, 2018), Bradley’s “Wind Chill Factor” (The Little Things, 2019), Randy Scott’s “Joyride” (Elevation, 2020), Lin Rountree’s “Fluid” (Fluid, 2021), Gregory Goodloe’s “Groovin’ On” (Groovin’ On, 2024), and Scott’s “Embrace” (Oasis, 2024).
Broening stepped forward as a solo artist when he released the full-length album Never Too Late in 2023; the project featured guest appearances by Marian Meadows, Althea Rene, Lin Rountree, and Randy Scott. Three of its tracks reached the top of the smooth jazz chart—“The Way She Moves,” “Talk to Me,” and “Let It Breathe”—while “Summer Blue” and “Shine a Light” both reached the Top 15.
