Biography
In contrast to Barbie's Cradle and Moonstar 88, Mojofly supplied a radio-friendly, pop-inflected option amid the Philippines' broader modern rock landscape. Bassist Ricci Gurango assembled the band in the late '90s to satisfy his remaining contractual obligations from his prior outfit, Hungry Young Poets. Their 1999 debut album Birthday drew listeners from both mainstream and alternative circles. The group played shopping-mall circuits across the Philippines, presenting an approachable style that surpassed the prevailing MOR acts yet fell short of the edge implied by the band's name. Lead vocalist Kitchie Nadal's striking appeal turned her into a favored pinup, driving later singles including "Another Day" and "Scooter Boy" to widespread domestic attention.
Following the release of two albums, Nadal departed in June 2003 to focus on coursework at De La Salle University in the Philippines. One year afterward she achieved stronger solo sales than she had with Mojofly, issuing a self-titled album that rapidly earned gold certification. Liberated to compose her own material, Nadal cultivated an extensive teenage-girl audience through confessional songwriting and reached the top chart spot with "Huwag Na Huwag Mong Sasabihin" (Don't Say It). While her attractive appearance and slim build also attracted male admirers, she continued to emphasize emotionally resonant music.
Mojofly recruited Lougee Basabas in Nadal's place and scored a return hit with "Mata" (Eye) in 2004. With Nadal gone, Gurango remained the sole original member and sustained the project as a duo alongside Basabas, supported by a rotating roster of session guitarists and drummers.
