Biography

Damon Albarn, the vocalist and songwriter behind Blur and Gorillaz, pursued Monkey: Journey to the West as an additional side endeavor rather than a standard band effort. This theatrical staging reinterpreted the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, with visual artist Jamie Hewlett—another Gorillaz participant—and opera director Chen Shi-Zheng contributing to the production. The work first appeared in Manchester in June 2007. Its accompanying soundtrack performed strongly in the U.K., entering the Top Five on album charts and reaching the top position on the indie charts.
