Biography
New York City quartet Morningsiders weave melodic, story-driven indie folk that draws from country, bluegrass, Americana, and the softer edges of jazz-rock. They broke into wider audiences in 2015 through the streaming success of “Empress,” then followed that momentum by issuing their debut full-length, A Little Lift, in 2018 and the sophomore album Pollen in 2020. For the 2021 EP Easy Does It, the band recruited producer Peter Katis (Sharon Van Etten, the National), resulting in a tighter, more radio-friendly folk-pop approach.
Magnus Ferguson (lead vocals, guitar) and Reid Jenkins (fiddle, vocals) launched the group while attending Columbia University in 2012; they soon added Cody Gibson (bass, vocals) and David Su (drums, vocals). Their buoyant, off-kilter single “Empress” aired in a Starbucks commercial in 2014, preceding the release of their debut EP, Unfocus, in early 2015. The track later surged as a viral streaming hit. In 2016, pianist and trumpeter Luther Wong joined for an Audiotree Live session.
Morningsiders resurfaced in November 2017 with “Somewhere in Between,” inaugurating a twelve-month run of monthly singles. The December entry, “Honey Hold Me,” landed on a prominent playlist assembled by Taylor Swift. Both songs anchored the 2018 album A Little Lift. Two years afterward came the folk-rock-leaning Pollen, followed in 2021 by the Peter Katis-produced Easy Does It EP.
