In 1971 producer Hans van Hemert formed the colorful Dutch pop duo Mouth & MacNeal by pairing former construction worker and rocker Willem Duyn, who performed as Big Mouth, with classically trained vocalist Sjoukje Van’t Spiijker, known as Maggie MacNeal. The act became best known for its 1972 international hit “How Do You Do.” Their debut single “Hey You Love” scored a major regional success, yet it was the follow-ups “How Do You Do” and “Hello-A” that both climbed to number one on the Dutch charts. The former track went on to spend 19 weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold. That momentum carried the group’s first album onto Billboard’s Top 100 albums chart, but the hit proved to be their last; the duo soon split, with Big Mouth later joining Ingrid Kup, whom he married, while MacNeal carried on as a solo artist.
