British pop outfit Edison Lighthouse originated as a showcase for session vocalist Tony Burrows, whose only chart entry with the act arrived via the 1970 single “Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes).” That track formed one-quarter of an unprecedented U.K. sweep in which Burrows simultaneously placed four different singles inside the Top Ten, the others being White Plains’ “My Baby Loves Lovin’,” the Pipkins’ “Gimme Dat Ding,” and the Brotherhood of Man’s “United We Stand.” In practice the project was shaped chiefly by songwriters and producers Tony Macaulay and Barry Mason, who later enlisted members of Greenfield Hammer to create a performing lineup. Once Burrows stepped away to concentrate on additional work, Macaulay—who retained ownership of the Edison name—simply assembled a replacement roster. The new configuration reached the U.K. Top 50 with “It’s Up to You, Petula,” after which the act’s chart activity ceased. Spearheaded by early-’70s participants Brian Huggins and Peter Butt, a later edition of Edison Lighthouse maintained an occasional touring presence that extended well into the twenty-first century.
