Biography
Distinguished from the similarly named American ensemble linked to James Taylor, the British studio group Flying Machine originated through the efforts of producers and songwriters Tony Macaulay, renowned for his collaborations with the Foundations, alongside Geoff Stevens. Drawing partially from the remaining members of Pinkerton's Assorted Colours, also recognized as the Pinkertons, the lineup featured Tony Newman, who handled vocals while playing guitar, Steve Jones providing lead guitar and vocals, Sam Kempe also on vocals, Stuart Colman on bass, and Paul Wilkinson handling drums. Their musical style encompassed pop elements extending into light psychedelia, leading to multiple singles issued via Pye during 1969 and 1970, with the process reaching its peak via the 1970 release Down to Earth with the Flying Machine. A comprehensive two-CD collection titled Flight Recorder emerged from Sequel in 1998, encompassing their entire output.
