The precise circumstances that placed middle-aged homemaker Mrs. Elva Miller on Capitol Records’ mid-1960s roster alongside the Beatles and the Beach Boys continue to puzzle music historians. Though she possessed scant vocal ability, her cheerfully misguided albums now rank among the most sought-after artifacts for enthusiasts of lounge and novelty material. Described as a devoted opera enthusiast who had spent years studying voice, she regularly sang at local church events in the Claremont, California region and had already issued a few privately funded singles when Capitol A&R man Lex de Azevedo signed her in 1966. Her first release, the audaciously named Mrs. Miller’s Greatest Hits, featured her strained interpretations of contemporary hits ranging from “Downtown” to “Let’s Hang On.” Appearances on programs hosted by Ed Sullivan, Jack Paar, and other variety-show hosts quickly followed, along with two further LPs, Will Success Spoil Mrs. Miller? and The Country Soul of Mrs. Miller, after which she left the label. In 1969 she resurfaced briefly on the small Amaret imprint with Mrs. Miller Does Her Thing and then withdrew from recording altogether.
