Drawing his moniker from a figure in William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch, the Belgian DJ, producer, and party promoter known as Mugwump favors dense rhythms, deep low-end frequencies, and pronounced echo effects. Raised in Belgium during the height of the New Beat scene—a genre characterized by its deliberate tempos and industrial textures that crested toward the close of the 1980s—he launched his DJ career in the early 1990s amid shifting musical currents. Acid house, house, and techno dominated his selections at that time. His performances during those years alternated between gigs on the Spanish party destination Ibiza and venues back home. Returning to Belgium in 1996, he took charge of the Food club, transforming it into a cornerstone establishment under his guidance. This role proved exacting, evident in the fact that his initial releases did not emerge until 2004, when the Mudcleaner 12" came out via Suicide Recordings. In 2008, he aligned with the esteemed Kompakt imprint for the Meditation EP. The following year brought the Everything Remains 12" on R&S, along with Die Nacht Ist Kuhl on International Deejay Gigolo. Establishing Subfield as his personal label in 2014 paved the way for its integration as a !K7 subsidiary the next year, coinciding with the arrival of his first full-length effort, Unspell.
