Born in Italy on 19 September 1926, Celeste Rosso passed away in 1994. Parental insistence on an academic path drove the teenager to flee his household, yet discovery performing trumpet at a Nice venue prompted his family to withdraw their objections. He promptly assembled a compact ensemble whose engagements soon extended past national borders, encompassing a tour through India. A stint performing on Radio Turin preceded his move to Rome, where he earned acclaim as a commanding figure in mainstream jazz circles. Commercial success ultimately arrived via pop once Durium signed him toward the close of 1962. The debut release ‘La Ballenta Della Tromba’ achieved solid domestic sales, while the self-penned ‘Concerto Disperato’ from 1963 registered on charts reaching Japan. Peak recognition came with ‘Il Silenzio’, the theme from the 1965 film The Legion’s Last Patrol featuring Stewart Granger; co-authored with Guglielmo Brazzo, the piece reimagined ‘The Last Post’. Although Eddie Calvert issued a British version and Al Hirt supplied an American counterpart, Rosso’s original recording achieved worldwide impact, earning him the inaugural Common Market Gold Disc award presented in Hamburg.
