Normil Hawaiians emerged as an experimental post-punk collective rooted in the South London region and centered on vocalist/guitarist Guy Smith. The ensemble took shape in 1979 and shifted from an energetic punk-rooted act that produced the 1980 single "The Beat Goes On," which charted on the U.K. independent singles listing, into an eccentric avant-garde unit by the mid-'80s, yet every phase retained politically conscious lyrics alongside a D.I.Y. approach. Following prolonged neglect, their catalog saw reissues throughout the 2010s while a refreshed lineup came together. The reunited act issued the single "In the Stone" in 2020, after which the 2021 compilation Dark World assembled key early tracks. Empires Into Sand, marking the band's first full-length since re-formation, appeared in 2024.

During September 1979 the group captured its initial demo at a South London studio, where Smith worked alongside Jim Lusted on vocals and guitar, Janet Armstrong on vocals, Kev Armstrong on guitar, Colin Donaldson on bass, and Chris Westerman on drums. The next April an expanded and refined configuration that included Roger Smith on violin, the Famous Delfonso on sax, Nick Rose on bass, plus Sue Leeves and Sarah Harley supplying backing vocals entered a West London facility under producer Nick Godwin to re-record the demo's catchy post-punk track "The Beat Goes On" together with the fresh number "Ventilation" and an uncredited cover of "In Heaven" from Eraserhead. A reduced formation consisting of Smith, Lusted, Rose, Leeves, and drummer Brian Kealy then taped a session for John Peel's radio program the following month, with the performance airing three times that year. Janet Armstrong subsequently departed to pursue solo work.

October 1980 finally brought the release of the "The Beat Goes On" single on London's Dining Out label, where it reached number 44 on the independent singles chart. Most of the lineup from the Peel Sessions, with Leeves omitted and Stephen Berlin added as guest vocalist, convened in November at a studio in the group's Orpington hometown to record under the joint production of Lusted, Smith, Kev Armstrong, and Pete Leggett; the resulting five tracks surfaced as the 12" EP Gala Failed on Red Rhino Records in February 1981. That same month a leaner trio of Smith, Lusted, and Armstrong laid down a fresh single titled "Still Obedient," issued by Illuminated Records.

By then Smith had redirected the collective toward an entirely different course, inaugurating a new Normil Hawaiians phase that shed most earlier punk elements in favor of an unpredictable experimental approach built around atmospheric synths, acoustic guitars, and heightened improvisation. In June 1982 Smith joined Simon Marchant, Mark Tyler, and drummer Noel Blanden at Wales' Foel Studio, operated by engineer Dave Anderson, formerly the bassist for Amon Düül II and Hawkwind, to document the band's debut full-length, More Wealth Than Money. Illuminated Records put out the double LP, although distribution issues confined availability to Europe rather than the U.K.

A further altered roster comprising Smith, Marchant, Blanden, Leeves, Jimmy Miller, and new bassist Alun "Wilf" Williams tracked What's Going On?, the group's most overtly political statement to date, at Foel Studio during summer 1983. The album surfaced on Illuminated Records early in 1984, prompting the increasingly theatrical live presentation to reach European venues and festivals, with Lusted returning briefly for a Swiss tour. Over winter 1985–1986 much of the prior album's personnel reconvened at Foel to capture the third Normil Hawaiians album. Another improvisation-driven effort carrying pointed political lyrics, the recordings ultimately received the title Return of the Ranters yet remained unreleased as members dispersed to start families and pursue separate musical projects.

Return of the Ranters received a brief digital outing in early 2013, and Upset the Rhythm finally issued the album on CD and vinyl in October 2015, prompting assembly of a performing lineup for the first Normil Hawaiians concert in three decades. The label reissued More Wealth Than Money in late 2017, its CD version adding a second disc of previously unheard demos, while What's Going On? underwent comparable reissue treatment in 2019. The newly composed single "In the Stone" appeared in 2020. Dark World, a 2021 compilation spanning material from 1979 to 1981, followed. The group then settled on Scotland's Kintyre peninsula, established a home studio, and recorded its first album since the 1980s. Empires Into Sand, an atmospheric set of poetic pieces and field recordings, emerged in 2024.
