Hærleif Langås, based in Trondheim, Norway, launched the atmospheric dark ambient project Northaunt in 1996. Its initial recordings blended field recordings with sparse, haunting melodies to evoke the harsh Norwegian tundra. Ketil Søraker contributed delicate, spacious acoustic guitars to the first two albums, The Ominous Silence from 2001 and The Barren Land from 2004, both issued by Fluttering Dragon; afterward most releases featured Langås working alone. Horizons, the third album and the first on Cyclic Law, appeared in 2006 and marked a decisive move toward purely minimalist textures. Langås then turned his attention to the side projects Non Ethos, Therradaemon, and Mulm. In 2009 Northaunt performed live with Søraker, now recording as Taphephobia, and with Svartsinn, releasing a split CD-R at those shows. A further split album with Svartsinn, titled The Borrowed World, followed in 2013. Northaunt returned to Cyclic Law for the double album Istid I-II in 2015. Last Bleak Days Records issued the limited CD-R Night Paths in 2017, and Glacial Movements released Istid III the next year.
