Numb.er draws from the lineage of dark-toned acts emerging out of bright Los Angeles, blending elements of shoegaze, synth pop, and Krautrock while paying tribute to post-punk influences. Jeff Fribourg, who serves as the group's singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and photographer, established the project, with its shadowy yet affectionate style taking shape on the 2018 release Goodbye.

Fribourg, having co-founded the L.A. psych outfit Froth, launched Numb.er in 2015. He redirected the synthesizer skills developed in his previous band toward a more shadowy path, drawing inspiration from Wire, Gang of Four, Christian Death, and Bauhaus. Once home recordings were completed, the project grew into a complete ensemble featuring bassist Laena Geronimo, guitarist Nick Ventura, guitarist/keyboardist Kaz Mirblouk, and drummer Cameron Allen. Their initial single "Fear" came out in 2017 on Mono Records and featured in the Volcom skate video Holy Stokes. After performing multiple times at the Echo, a neighborhood spot, the band's debut album Goodbye arrived on Felte in May 2018, with mixing and mastering handled by Mikey Young of Total Control.
