Obey Robots emerged in 2023 by fusing the lively guitar style of Ned's Atomic Dustbin's Rat with the lyrical skill and deep bass lines of She Makes War's Laura Kidd, launching via their U.K. Top 40 debut album One in a Thousand.

In the midst of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns, Ned's guitarist Rat accumulated fresh song ideas and sought a female singer for collaboration, turning to his acquaintance Wonder Stuff frontman Miles Hunt for recommendations. Having come across the vocals of She Makes War and Penfriend's Laura Kidd, he viewed her as an ideal match for the endeavor, unaware of her close ties to Hunt. That same year Rat and Kidd joined forces to develop his early concepts, with Kidd handling production and enlisting drummer Max Saidi to complete the arrangements. Their first single, "Not the Quiet Type," surfaced in late 2022, merging the signature Ned's approach in Rat's guitar work with Kidd's distinctive vocal delivery. Several months afterward, during early 2023, the pair released their debut album One in a Thousand, which entered the U.K. Top 40 immediately upon issue.
