Oliviero de Fabritiis earned his reputation chiefly through authoritative readings of the central Italian Romantic operatic canon. Born in Rome, he trained at the city’s conservatory before making his professional bow in 1920 at the Teatro Adriano. A short engagement in Salerno preceded his appointment as artistic secretary at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, a post he held from 1932 to 1943; throughout those years he appeared regularly on the same stage. His most sustained partnership was with tenor Beniamino Gigli, for whom he led the landmark recorded performances of Andrea Chénier, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly. Premieres of new operas by Mascagni, Pizzetti, Rossellini, and Zafred also figured among his responsibilities. International attention followed his 1963 appearance at the Edinburgh Festival, and two years later he led his first Covent Garden production. Although he produced a sizable body of vocal compositions, these works remained overshadowed by his stature on the operatic podium.
