Palle Danielsson earned his greatest recognition through extensive sideman engagements alongside an array of leading bandleaders. He devoted five years to violin studies beginning at age eight. He subsequently changed to bass and launched his professional performing life at fifteen. Upon completing his training at the Stockholm Royal Academy of Music between 1962 and 1966, he joined forces with prominent Scandinavian players such as Jan Garbarek and Bobo Stenson. Visiting American jazz figures in his homeland routinely enlisted him, leading to collaborations with Bill Evans, George Russell, Ben Webster, and Charlie Shavers. He rose to wider notice as a member of Keith Jarrett’s European quartet from 1974 to 1979, a unit that also contained Jan Garbarek. Danielsson likewise toured and recorded with Charles Lloyd in the early 1980s, Michel Petrucciani, and Kenny Wheeler. Palle Danielsson died on May 18, 2024, at the age of 77.
