Seattle electronic musician Norm Chambers crafted opulent, gently undulating soundscapes as Panabrite, relying on vintage analog synthesizers and drum machines. His output drew from early new age, kosmische, and library music traditions, resulting in music that was consistently bright, effervescent, and emotive while suggesting natural environments and venturing into science-fiction imagery. Chambers maintained an extraordinary level of productivity across dozens of releases yet stayed inventive and avoided repetition. Panabrite titles encompassed Sub-Aquatic Meditation (2012) and Pavilion (2014), while his own-name discography featured entries such as Mirage Colony (2022).

Chambers launched Panabrite recordings in 2010 as limited-edition cassettes on imprints including Cylindrical Habitat Modules, Hobo Cult, and Tranquility Tapes. Digitalis released Science of the Sea in 2011 under the Jürgen Müller pseudonym; the album was framed as a rediscovery of a long-forgotten early-’80s new age record and received a “Best New Reissue” review from Pitchfork. Although later identified as a fresh Chambers recording, the work authentically and imaginatively reproduced the sonic character of that period and ranked among the label’s most successful releases.

Beginning in 2012, several labels issued Panabrite material on LP and CD. Under the Spire reissued the earlier cassette Illumination on vinyl, Digitalis released the LP Soft Terminal, Aguirre Records brought out Sub-Aquatic Meditation on vinyl, and Australian imprint Preservation issued the CD The Baroque Atrium. Cassettes appeared on VCO Records and Constellation Tatsu in 2013, followed by the somewhat darker Pavilion LP on Immune in 2014; the same label issued the cassette Disintegrating Landscape in 2015. U.K. label Deep Distance released the LP Transfer in 2016.

From that point onward Chambers issued most music under his own name. Multiple cassettes and digital releases preceded the Love All Day LPs Air Example (2019) and Facets (2020). Spectrum Garden appeared on Soft Profile in early 2021, Muzan Editions released Panabrite’s Sub Aquatic Meditation Vol. 2, Seaside Resonance came out on Hotham Sound, and Soft Profile issued the CD Mirage Colony in early 2022. Diagnosed with a rare form of sinus cancer in 2019, Chambers died at his home on October 30, 2022. ~ Paul Simpson
