Ian Button, whose extensive background as a guitarist, songwriter, and producer encompassed extended periods with Death in Vegas and Thrashing Doves, launched the ambitious collective Papernut Cambridge in the early 2010s. The venture stemmed from a strikingly detailed dream he experienced many years before, centered on a vibrant pop ensemble. Serving as the project's focal point, Button enlisted dozens of musician collaborators to bring his pieces to fruition, evoking the bold attitude of 1970s glam rock together with the tuneful craft of 1990s Brit-pop figures such as Supergrass and Blur. The group's inaugural release, Cambridge Nutflake, emerged in 2013 through the Gare du Nord label. Button sustained a steady pace of output thereafter, delivering new albums each year alongside assorted singles and smaller projects, among them the widely praised There's No Underground in 2014, Nutlets 1967-80 in 2015, and a 2016 joint 7" alongside Darren Hayman.
