Emerging onto the UK music landscape at the height of the Madchester phenomenon, the seven-piece group Paris Angels hailed from Manchester. In 1990, they secured their initial contract with the indie imprint Sheer Joy, after which their opening release "Perfume" achieved strong results by reaching the Top Ten of the independent listings during that season. Nearly matching that performance, the subsequent tracks "Scope" and "Fade" paved the way for a Virgin Records agreement. The band's sole long-player, Sundew, appeared the following year and earned favorable notices in the domestic press, though listeners remained largely unmoved amid the waning Madchester trend. The transfer of Virgin to EMI further isolated the act, prompting its dissolution. Paul "Wags" Wagstaff, who handled guitar duties, eventually joined Black Grape as well as a reunited Happy Mondays.
