Biography
Perú Negro, an Afro-Peruvian ensemble, originated under the guidance of Ronaldo Campos de la Colina with the aim of safeguarding the heritage of Black Peruvians. Earning acclaim for its efforts in salvaging ancestral musical traditions and dances, the ensemble gained worldwide attention following the release of a compilation album titled Afro-Peruvian classics: The Soul of Black Peru by Luaka Bop, the label associated with David Byrne, which included tracks from Perú Negro alongside contributions from Susana Baca, Lucila Campos, local star Chabuca Granda, and various other notable performers. Sangre De Un Don came out via the European imprint World Connection in 1999, with its American distribution occurring in 2001. During that particular year, the ensemble's creator met his end.
