Biography
American musician and songwriter Peter Matthew Bauer helped establish the Walkmen, a widely respected indie rock outfit, though his musical path included earlier projects and led him to launch a solo career soon after that group entered an indefinite pause. His solo albums feature elaborate arrangements and a style that occasionally tilts toward folk while channeling the same intensity he brought to the Walkmen, as he tests varied sonic directions and examines intimate emotional territory on releases such as Liberation! from 2014 and Flowers from 2022.
Prior to forming the Walkmen, Bauer co-established the Recoys, an independent Boston band that began in 1996. Following the Recoys’ breakup in 1999, he and Hamilton Leithauser joined forces with musicians from the recently dissolved Jonathan Fire*Eater to create the Walkmen. Bauer handled bass and organ duties in the Walkmen across fourteen years until the band’s 2014 hiatus, after which he turned immediately to finishing original material issued under his own name.
His first solo effort, the introspective Liberation!, appeared on the Mexican Summer label in 2014. In 2017 he released Mount Qaf (Divine Love) through Fortune Tellers/Kobalt, presenting a set of broadly interpreted love songs. Bauer returned in September 2022 with Flowers, again via Fortune Tellers, an album defined by intricate, densely layered production and the reflective songwriting approach that had become characteristic of his work.
