Biography
Phil Coulter, a composer, producer, and performer born in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1942, rose to prominence as the leading figure in contemporary Celtic music and the top-selling Irish artist of his era. While enrolled in music studies at Queens University in Belfast, he launched his professional work by crafting the Capitol Showband's 1963 hit "Foolin' Time" and later supplying the group's 1965 Eurovision Song Contest entry "Walking the Streets in the Rain." Additional early works encompassed Twinkle's 1964 chart-topper "Terry" as well as Them's frequently interpreted garage-rock staple "I Can Only Give You Everything." His most substantial commercial achievements arrived through a songwriting alliance with Bill Martin, yielding major pop successes such as Sandie Shaw's Eurovision-winning "Puppet on a String" and Cliff Richard's "Congratulations." Even amid this pop activity, Coulter retained ties to the Irish folk traditions of his upbringing by collaborating with the Dubliners, Planxty, and the Furey Brothers, all while generating a string of hits for the Bay City Rollers. Following the dissolution of his Martin partnership in the late 1970s, he shifted focus toward performance, releasing the solo debut Classic Tranquility in 1983. The album's contemplative, richly orchestrated interpretations of traditional Celtic material resonated strongly with Irish listeners, and follow-ups such as 1984's Sea of Tranquility and 1985's Phil Coulter's Ireland established him as the nation's foremost commercial artist. Subsequent releases, among them 1990's Words and Music, 1993's Recollections, and 2000's Highland Cathedral, extended his reach to expanding global audiences. Early in 2001, Shanachie issued the intimate Songs I Love So Well.
