Phoebe Cockburn first earned notice as the frontwoman of the alt-rock band Snakadaktal and its offshoot Two People, before issuing the 2022 EP Player and the 2024 album Marmalade under the Phoebe Go name, where she shifts from indie-rock textures toward folk and country leanings.

Born in Melbourne’s Ferntree Gully suburb to parents who enjoyed music without performing it themselves, she began composing songs while still a pre-teen. In 2009, during her high-school years, she helped launch Snakadaktal, serving as vocalist and synth player and enriching the group’s indie-rock arrangements. The outfit, a Triple J favorite, saw its 2013 debut album Sleep in the Water climb into the Australian Top Ten; the band dissolved the following year.

Cockburn then formed Two People with Snakadaktal guitarist Joey Clough, and the pair delivered albums in 2019 and 2020 that folded their earlier sound into tighter, more self-contained productions.

During the height of the COVID-19 lockdown she started writing the first Phoebe Go material, which proved more guitar-centric and autobiographical than her prior work. Those songs surfaced on the 2022 EP Player, whose highlights include “We Don’t Talk,” “Be the Player, Not the Poet,” and “Hey,” the last a tribute to a late cousin. She and producer Simon Lam promptly returned to the studio, resulting in the 2024 album Marmalade and its notable tracks “Good Fight,” “Leave,” and “7 Up.”
