Biography
Phuture issued just a small number of recordings, along with an album that appeared a full ten years after their first release, yet the act earned lasting legendary status in Chicago house through their pounding 1987 single "Acid Trax," the cut that launched and shaped the acid house style. DJ Pierre, synthesizer enthusiast Spanky, and Herb J assembled the group in 1985 specifically as a studio project to generate material Pierre could weave into his sets at key Chicago venues. Introduced to the piercing squelch of the Roland TB-303 synthesizer, originally pitched as a bassline device for solo guitarists, the three exited the studio with a track they titled "In Your Mind." Ron Hardy first aired the song at his famed club the Music Box, where listeners came to know it as "Ron Hardy's Acid Track," prompting Phuture to rework the piece under Marshall Jefferson's production. Issued by Trax Records in 1987, the single marked a clear divide in the local Chicago sound, as countless "Acid Trax" copycats soon inundated the market. Once the record gained traction in Britain, it provided the soundtrack for the surge of club energy that crystallized into the rave movement by decade's end.
Although they captured one track with enormous dancefloor impact worldwide, Phuture navigated an uneven course through the remainder of the 1980s. Herb J departed after the follow-up single "We Are Phuture" and was succeeded by emerging producer Roy Davis, Jr. DJ Pierre exited after several more singles and was in turn replaced by Damon Neloms, known as Professor Trax. The lineup of Spanky, Davis, Jr., and Neloms completed the 1992 track "Inside Out" before the group went inactive for a stretch of years. Phuture resurfaced in 1996 under the name Phuture 303, now including L.A. Williams, and issued the album Alpha & Omega the following year.
