Biography
Todd Terry ranks among house music’s most inventive, accomplished, and tireless creators. No one shaped the New York variant of the genre in the 1980s more decisively than he did, constructing an eclectic, sample-heavy collage that fused vintage disco grooves, the inward-focused Chicago style that had emerged earlier that decade, and a strong dose of hip-hop swagger plus unauthorized sampling. That loose, breakbeat-heavy approach exerted powerful influence on British rave and hardcore scenes, while his work with rappers—most notably the Jungle Brothers on the 1988 track “I’ll House You”—helped spread hip-house beyond its Chicago origins. Numerous releases under the Royal House and Todd Terry Project banners reached the top of American club charts and entered the British pop listings, yet his most visible mainstream breakthrough arrived with the pervasive 1995 remix of Everything But the Girl’s “Missing.” High-profile remixes continued to flow, alongside further club successes such as the 1996 garage-house anthem “Keep on Jumpin’” and the 1997 single “Something Goin’ On,” both featuring Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown; afterward he surprised listeners by abandoning song-based formats for shadowy drum’n’bass on the 1999 album Resolutions. Productivity never slackened into the twenty-first century: fresh house material appeared regularly on a variety of imprints, among them his own Sound Design, In House Records, and Freeze Records, while occasional excursions into hip-hop and electro surfaced, including the 2013 release Todd Terry vs. That Trap Shitt. Singles issued throughout the 2020s have featured partnerships with Kevin Saunderson, Robin S., House Gospel Choir, and additional artists, complemented by Retrospective compilation sets that anthologize career-spanning highlights.
A Brooklyn native, Terry took up DJ duties while still a teenager in the early 1980s, playing hip-hop at school functions and outdoor events alongside the Scooby Doo Crew. Growing exposure to Italian disco followed, and once Chicago’s house sound arrived in the mid-1980s he formally pivoted to the new style. Alongside fellow New York DJ-producer-remixers Little Louie Vega and Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez, he adopted the Masters at Work moniker—later made famous by Vega and Gonzalez—for one of his earliest major efforts, the 1987 single “Alright Alright,” which quickly became a landmark on the city’s nascent house circuit. The Jungle Brothers, a rap collective already edging toward house, joined forces with Terry; the resulting “I’ll House You” stands as one of the first widely noticed blends of the two genres, a fusion later echoed by C+C Music Factory and Snap!.
The ensuing acclaim boosted his own profile, yielding two enormously popular 1988 singles—“Weekend” and the Arthur Russell-sampling “Bango (To the Batmobile)”—issued as the Todd Terry Project. Favoring the respect of dedicated club audiences, Terry subsequently employed dozens of pseudonyms for countless dance-floor successes; among them are Black Riot’s “A Day in the Life,” Gypsymen’s “Hear the Music,” Royal House’s “Can You Party,” CLS’s “Can You Feel It,” and Tech Nine’s “Slam Jam.” Beyond his own catalog he supplied remixes or collaborations for an array of well-known acts that includes Björk, Janet Jackson, P.M. Dawn, Tina Turner, and Annie Lennox. The early-1990s British house surge brought frequent overseas engagements, among them a prominent residency at London’s Ministry of Sound superclub. His turntable skills drew such fervent admiration that several U.K. writers dubbed him “God.”
In 1991 Terry entered label ownership by establishing Freeze Records together with William Socolov. (Earlier singles had already appeared on Socolov’s Fresh and Sleeping Bag imprints, which also housed rap acts such as EPMD, Mantronix, and Nice & Smooth.) Freeze naturally served as the outlet for many subsequent productions, including those credited to Sax and Sound Design as well as multiple installments of the Unreleased Project EP series that ran from 1992 to 1995.
The same year brought his remix of “Missing” by the formerly pop-oriented duo Everything But the Girl, a global phenomenon that sold more than three million copies and effectively relaunched the pair’s career in a polished dance-floor guise. Hard Times issued the 1995 DJ set A Night in the Life of Todd Terry: Live at Hard Times, while Sound of Ministry presented the contrasting A Day in the Life of Todd Terry, an expanded edition of Unreleased Project Part 7. The 1997 album Ready for a New Day offered further vocal-driven yet dance-rooted material featuring guests Martha Wash, Jocelyn Brown, Shannon, and Bernard Fowler. “Something Goin’ On,” “Keep On Jumpin’,” and “It’s All Over Love” each reached number one on the Billboard club chart and rank among Terry’s strongest British hits. Another stylistic pivot led to the drum’n’bass-focused 1999 album Resolutions, recorded for Astralwerks.
Alongside the existing Freeze Records, Terry launched In House Records, TT Records, and Sound Design. He kept issuing singles while also delivering mix CDs and retrospectives such as 2005’s The Todd Terry Trilogy: Past, Present & Future and 2007’s Strictly Todd Terry. Album projects in the early 2010s included style-specific outings like Todd Terry vs. That Trap Shitt, Freestyle Forever, Todd Terry vs. Hip-Hop (Dramatical Volume 1), and This Is Acid House. A further anthology appeared in 2016 as part of Defected’s House Masters series. Original tracks and reworked older material continued to emerge at a remarkable pace, encompassing work with newer house and EDM figures such as Leftwing : Kody and Oliver Nelson together with established names including Louie Vega, Kevin Saunderson, Robin S., and Danny Rampling. He produced House Gospel Choir’s 2020 track “My Zulu,” while 2021 output featured the Junior Sanchez collaboration “Live Forever” as well as solo cuts “Give It Up” and “To da Breakdown.”
In 2022 Terry issued “Something Going On 2022,” an updated version of his earlier hit with Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown. Additional releases that year comprised “This Is the Sound” (with Riva Starr) and “Ride On Time” (with Butter Rush), both reworkings of prior material. The 2023 slate included “Get On Down” (with Ferreck Dawn), “I Give You Love” (with Janika Tenn and Lee Wilson), and “The Sound” (with Leia Contois). Several Retrospective compilations surfaced in 2024 alongside fresh singles such as “Honey” (with Killa Time and Rychus Ryter).
