During the 1990s Cuban-American producers Oscar Gaetan and Ralph Falcon earned acclaim in America's house underground by crafting several of the era's standout tracks. These dark productions paired soulful vocal lines and strong chart performance with an acid-edged toughness that contrasted sharply against the sugary textures common to many dance releases. Most appeared on their own Murk Recordings imprint, later licensed via MCA/Tribal America, and were issued under assorted pseudonyms such as Liberty City, Funky Green Dogs, Deep South and Coral Way Chief. The two Miami natives first encountered house music separately, despite Falcon's four teenage years at a Georgia military academy. Early domestic figures like Farley Jackmaster Funk and Todd Terry, along with later British arrivals such as A Guy Called Gerald, shaped their developing tastes as they gradually joined the local dance community.

Following the DSR Records release of their single "Tricky Jazz," the pair delivered Mission Control's "Outta Limits," which surfaced on an Atlantic compilation in 1992. By then they had already founded Murk Recordings and issued material as Intruder and Interceptor. Their subsequent Liberty City production, "Some Lovin'," featured family friend Bebe Dozier on vocals and offered a hypnotic, mellowed trance excursion that introduced the duo to an international audience, prompting worldwide DJ bookings.

MCA's Tribal America division reacted to their rising profile in 1993 by licensing the entire Murk catalog and releasing Murk: The Singles Collection. Another Liberty City single that year, "If You Really Love Someone," also scored as a club success. The producers supplied remixes for Madonna, Pet Shop Boys, the Beloved and RuPaul. Although Gaetan and Falcon each pursued separate label ventures in 1994, Gee Man Soul and Miami Soul Records respectively, they soon reunited to complete a Liberty City album. Issued in 1996 under the earlier Funky Green Dogs alias, Get Fired Up achieved crossover success driven by the number one dance single "Fired Up!" and the additional club favorite "The Way." The duo contributed a volume to the United DJ's of America mix series in 1999.
