Biography
French electronic music producer and DJ Christophe Le Friant established an enduring presence under the Bob Sinclar alias, exporting the hallmarks of French house to worldwide audiences beginning in the late 1990s. During a mid-2000s commercial peak that saw Western Dream, Soundz of Freedom, and Born in '69 each earn gold status in France, the single "Love Generation" reached the summit of international charts in 2005, while the follow-up "World, Hold On (Children of the Sky)" featuring Steve Edwards earned him a Grammy nomination the subsequent year. Charting releases continued through the 2010s, among them the gold-certified successes "Feel the Vibe" and "I Believe." In 2022 a Fisher rework of "World, Hold On" resurfaced as a hit in Australia and the U.K. Beyond his own recordings, Le Friant has led the French label Yellow Productions, which he co-founded in 1993 alongside Alain Ho.
His earliest forays came in the 1980s under the name Chris the French Kiss, encompassing the downtempo hip-hop project the Mighty Bop and the acid jazz outfit Réminiscence Quartet. By the late 1990s he had adopted the Bob Sinclar moniker—drawn from a character in the celebrated French film Le Magnifique—and delivered his first album, Paradise, in 1998; the set reached charts in France, New Zealand, and the U.K. Champs Élysées arrived in 2000 and secured gold certification in France. Following III in 2003, he achieved broad European breakthrough with 2006's Western Dream, whose hit singles included "Love Generation," "World, Hold On," "Rock This Party," and "Tennessee." Soundz of Freedom followed in 2007 as his first Top Ten entry, and mid-decade momentum carried into 2009's Born in '69, which showcased guest turns from the Sugarhill Gang, Shabba Ranks, Axwell, and Kevin Lyttle.
Sinclar opened the 2010s with the remix album Made in Jamaica, revisiting earlier material through an island lens; Sly & Robbie handled production while reggae artists Shaggy, Gary Pine, Queen Ifrica, Tony Rebel, and Dollarman contributed. Taking cues from high-profile collaboration models, he assembled Pitbull, Fatman Scoop, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Snoop Dogg, and Sean Paul for 2012's Disco Crash, which entered the French Top 20. The sleek Paris by Night mix surfaced the next year. Subsequent standalone singles encompassed the gold-certified 2015 track "Feel the Vibe" with Dawn Tillman, the 2016 Top 50 entry "Someone Who Needs Me," and 2017's "Til the Sun Rise Up" featuring Akon. Another gold-certified release, "I Believe," arrived in 2018. Entering the 2020s he maintained a flow of singles, among them 2021's "We Could Be Dancing" with Molly Hammar and the Fisher remix of "World, Hold On," the latter earning gold certification in Australia and the U.K. Through 2023 he collaborated on various tracks and remixes with Salome de Bahia, QUINZE, Riva Starr, A-Trak, and additional partners.
