Originating in Austin, Texas, the post-grunge emo band Pop Unknown cultivated a robust pop sensibility. Its lineup featured Tim Lasater on vocals and guitar, Gabe Wiley on drums, Joel Ganucheau on guitar, Matt Breedlove on guitar, and Casper Echols on bass. The group delivered its debut EP, Summer Season Kills, through Deep Elm in 1999 and shared stages with Pedro the Lion, Jimmy Eat World, and the Get Up Kids, forging a cohesive and powerful ensemble. That same year Pop Unknown unveiled its first full-length studio album, If Arsenic Fails, Try Algebra. The August Division arrived three years afterward. At a later stage several members initiated a side project called Kissing Chaos, which became their sole focus by the summer of 2002 and thereby brought Pop Unknown to an end.
