Biography
Born to Filipino action star Eddie Fernandez, Pops Fernandez ranks among the Philippines’ most prominent and lasting vocalists. She launched her recording career in 1981 at age 16 by signing with OctoArts. The following year she issued her debut LP, Pops, while also beginning a stint as co-host of the variety series Penthouse Live! alongside Martin Nievera. Her rapid rise turned her into one of the nation’s biggest teen idols, prompting the press to crown her the “Concert Queen” for drawing massive audiences, and her image soon graced the covers of numerous magazines. Five years after Penthouse Live! first aired, the program gave way to Martin and Pops Twogether, which Nievera and Fernandez hosted as a married couple rather than as mere colleagues. The series ended after two seasons, and the pair separated in 1998; they are parents to sons Robin and Ram. In 1995 Fernandez became part of the cast of variety show A.S.A.P. She cut the album Colours, largely composed of reflective love songs, the next year. At the 1999 KBP Golden Dove Awards she received the honor for Best Female Musical Variety Show Host. Her audience reaches well past Philippine shores, taking her on tours through the U.S., Japan, Hong Kong, Guam, and Italy. In 2001 she put out Shindig Live.
