Known throughout the Philippines as the Megastar, singer Sharon Cuneta stands as her nation’s foremost female vocalist, much as Michael Jackson reigned as the King of Pop across America. Her breakthrough arrived in 1978 when, at just twelve years old, she delivered the hit single “Mr. DJ,” penned specifically for her by acclaimed Pinoy songwriter Rey Valera. Though initially reluctant toward the number, she proceeded with the recording. The success of “Mr. DJ” propelled the offspring of a wealthy Philippine mayor into the spotlight and sparked repeated partnerships with Valera. That same year saw the release of her first album, DJ’s Pet, along with its successor Sharon, while a self-titled LP followed in 1980. Recognition came in 1981 through her selection as Jukebox Princess during the BAMCI Promotions Awards, and four years later she earned a nomination in the Best Female Vocal Performance category for “To Love Again” at the Cecil Awards. Throughout the 1980s, Cuneta also ranked among the country’s leading film stars. She entered into marriage with teen idol Gabby Concepcion, resulting in the birth of their daughter, Kristina Cassandra Cuneta Concepcion, on April 7, 1985; the couple later parted ways. Maturing brought a shift from the youthful charm of her debut hit toward deeper vocal expression and more polished production. In 1993, she claimed an Awit Award honoring her as Best Performance by a Female Recording Artist. The platinum-certified When I Love emerged in 1999, succeeded by Nothing I Want More two years afterward. Her second child, Simone Francesca Emmanuelle Cuneta Pangilinan, arrived in 2000.
