With a background as a seasoned composer, singer, guitarist, and pianist, Prince Phillip Mitchell traces his origins to classic R&B even though his reputation rests primarily on soul material. In the late '50s and early '60s he performed vocals for both The Premiers and The Checkmates. He also worked as a dancer with The Bean Brothers in Los Angeles. Songs he wrote became hits for Mel & Tim, Millie Jackson, Norman Connors, Joe Simon, and Candi Staton, yet his own recordings as a lead vocalist enjoyed far less success. His sole moderate chart entry, the 1978 Atlantic single "One On One," reached the R&B Top 40. Additional releases appeared on Event and Ichiban.
