Prolapse came together in Leicester, England, with vocalists “Scottish Mick” Derrick and Linda Steelyard, keyboardist Donald Ross, guitarists Pat Marsden and David Jeffreys, drummer Tim Pattison, and bassist Mick Harrison. Their sound is loud, raw, and furious, echoing the visceral approach of the Birthday Party, the Cure, and Bauhaus.

Cherry Red Records became the group’s first home, where they cut two EPs and their debut album. Audience interest quickly focused on their live shows, which proved even more unbridled than the music itself; the confrontational interplay between Derrick and Steelyard sometimes escalated into physical chaos that included hurled televisions.

The band’s first full-length release, Pointless Walks to Dismal Places, appeared in 1995. One year later Big Cat Records issued the follow-up Backsaturday, whose track list includes “Strain Contortion of Bag,” “Irritating Radiator,” and “Every Night I’m Mentally Crucified.”

Additional recordings emerged on the Cooking Vinyl and Radar imprints. As a six-piece, Prolapse toured both inside and beyond the United States, sharing stages with alternative acts that included Stereolab, Pulp, Sonic Youth, and Sebadoh.
