Propagandhi

Propagandhi emerged among the earliest acts signed to Fat Wreck Chords, maintaining an oppositional stance toward both mainstream culture and the expectations of their own imprint. Formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, by Chris Hannah and Jordy Samolesky, the radical outfit convened in 1989 and later shared a bill with NOFX. Conversations with Fat Mike revealed a mutual commitment to independent ethics, prompting the group to sign with his new label. Although they preferred bypassing commercial distribution and promotion entirely, they accepted certain concessions to disseminate lyrics advocating gay rights, feminism, civil liberties, and opposition to fascism. Over brisk, hook-driven punk arrangements, the band shifted fluidly between irreverent, thoughtful, and direct registers, as evidenced by tracks such as “I Was a Pre-Teen McCarthyist,” “Hate, Myth, Muscle, Etiquette,” and “Stick the Fucking Flag Up Your Goddam Ass, You Sonofabitch.”

A significant shift occurred in 1997 when vocalist, songwriter, and bassist John K. Samson departed to pursue writing, establish a publishing venture, and later assemble the Weakerthans. The remaining members launched G7 Welcoming Committee, which issued multiple Weakerthans releases along with the Canadian pressing of Propagandhi’s 2001 album Today’s Empire, Tomorrow’s Ashes. Their final Fat Wreck Chords outing, Potemkin City Limits, arrived in 2005 and listed Glen Lambert in place of Chris Hannah, though it soon emerged that Hannah had simply adopted the name as an alias. In 2006 the lineup expanded to a quartet with the addition of guitarist David Guillas, who had already toured with the band before appearing on record with 2009’s Supporting Caste. Three years afterward they delivered Failed States through Epitaph in 2012. Social-media posts in May 2017 confirmed completion of their seventh studio album, Victory Lap, which Epitaph issued that September.
