Biography
Born around 1978 in England and raised in Richmond, Surrey, Collins developed an early fascination with music while learning the trumpet. He later pursued postgraduate studies at London’s Guildhall School of Music. Widely admired for his exceptional post-bop technique, the trumpeter has built a devoted jazz following and earned substantial praise from critics. Wider recognition arrived during an extended tour alongside soul singer Omar. Jazz musicians he has both performed and occasionally recorded with include Renato D’Aeillo, Bruno D’Ambra, Mike Carr, Tim Garland, Michael Garrick, Ray Gelato, Basil Hodge, Dylan Howe, Tony Kofi, Jim Mullen, the Spitz Jazz Collective, John Surman, Jean Toussaint, Stan Tracey and Norma Winstone. Separate studio engagements have placed him alongside Basement Jaxx, Jocelyn Brown, 4 Hero, Lulu and US3.
Although Collins occasionally draws repertoire from earlier composers such as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, his own music remains firmly contemporary, fresh and inventive. For his 2007 debut album he assembled vibraphonist Jim Hart, bassist Michael Janisch and drummer Alyn Cosker, with saxophonist Kofi appearing as guest. Throughout 2007 and 2008 he toured the UK as a duo with Hart, who also joined his regular quartet featuring drummer James Madren. By the middle of the decade Collins had established himself as a prominent voice in British jazz.
