London-based artist Josh Quirke, who performs under his surname alone, crafts emotionally intense variations on techno, jungle, and ambient forms by intertwining ecstatic and melancholic sentiments with fractured rhythms. Positive notices greeted his opening EP Acid Beth upon its 2014 arrival, after which he kept a restrained presence, surfacing only intermittently with further EPs until his debut full-length Steal a Golden Hail appeared in 2019.

Quirke spent his early years in a Buckinghamshire village situated some fifty miles north of London. He first explored sound on family instruments that included a Clavinova digital piano. Art history studies at the University of Leeds preceded his move to London, where nearly every evening found him generating material on a computer. Acid Beth reached the public on the XL-affiliated Young Turks imprint in 2014 and drew favorable coverage from Pitchfork and FACT. Although hundreds of tracks accumulated, he applied rigorous judgment when choosing which pieces to issue. A white label 12" and an EP on Nic Tasker's Whities label both surfaced in 2016, followed by a second Whities EP in 2018. Multiple archive tracks emerged across 2019 before Whities closed the year with the release of his first album, Steal a Golden Hail, the most elaborate work he had produced to that point.
