Biography
The core influence Rabbi Shergill brought to music centered on deploying Punjabi—long regarded much like Bhangra or longstanding folk forms—to shape acoustic rock ballads that opened a fresh angle on the language itself. Poetic lyrics touching on social concerns, together with an adult alternative aesthetic, let him forge an immediate bond with city audiences drawn to the sincerity and originality of his work. He entered the field by writing jingles for assorted advertising agencies. After nearly five years of effort to secure a debut release, he delivered his self-titled album in 2005 on the recently launched Phat Phish Records. Word-of-mouth promotion and a striking video helped Rabbi Shergill attain rapid success. The track "Bulla Ki Jaana Main Kaun" stood as the non-film song receiving the most airplay across India in 2005. Following a three-year interval, Avengi Ja Nahin appeared in 2008.
