Biography
Jean-Philippe Rio-Py, performing under the name RIOPY, merges minimalism, pop, jazz, and cinematic elements to shape a singular piano approach that spans multiple genres. Although he began as a composer without teachers, Oxford studies later supported his dual path as a live performer and a contributor to television and film, where his solo piano works frequently underscored major movie trailers. Warner Classics added him to its roster and issued the self-titled RIOPY in 2018; Bliss followed in 2021.
Born in 1983 and raised in rural France, RIOPY discovered an abandoned piano and taught himself to play it. He developed pieces mentally before realizing them at the keyboard, never committing them to notation. Recognition arrived at age 17 when he was invited to perform at a charity telethon in Saint Maixent; there he encountered a Steinway for the first time and observed that it was to the piano what the Rolls Royce is to cars. Formal training began only in 2006, after his relocation to Oxford, England.
RIOPY’s output occupies the space between classical and pop traditions, both in its musical language and in the venues where it is presented. Early appearances in London clubs, among them Soho House, and in Paris generated further opportunities, including concerts at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and at the Arts Club in Mayfair. Representation by the Creative Arts Agency in Los Angeles opened doors to advertising campaigns for IKEA, Mercedes, Armani, and Samsung, as well as placements in trailers for The Danish Girl, The Sense of an Ending, and additional films, plus documentaries on BBC, ITV, and Channel 4.
Named a Young Steinway Artist, the photogenic RIOPY gained broader concert visibility and a contract with Warner Classics, which released his debut album of original material in 2018. Tree of Light followed in September 2019, and Bliss appeared in 2021.
