Biography
Robbie Wessels stands out as a versatile South African performer who combines singing and acting with a flair for humorous, memorable tracks. He first rose to prominence through the wildly popular viral single “Leeuloop,” taken from his 2006 album Halley se Komeet. Building on that momentum, he issued further collections such as 2009’s Afrika Sonsak, 2014’s Als Wat Ek Het, and 2019’s Staan Saam.
Born in Kroonstad, South Africa, in 1980, Wessels attended Hoërskool Strand and then pursued drama at the Tshwane University of Technology. After completing his studies in 2002 he began his acting career in earnest, portraying Poena Pieterse in the television series Gauteng-alêng-alêng’. Subsequent screen work included the 2007 spin-off film Poena is Konig and the 2011 feature ’n Saak van Geloof. While these roles accumulated he also turned his attention to music, releasing his debut album Halley se Komeet in 2006. The record featured the satirical dance track “Leeuloop,” which spread rapidly online and became a major success. He followed with Afrika Sonsak in 2009, then delivered the 2010 compilation Grootste Treffers, the 2011 album Kaalvoet, and Als Wat Ek Het in 2014. His fifth studio effort, Woestyn, appeared in 2017, and another full-length, Staan Saam, arrived in 2019. That same year he issued the single “Siya Kolisi” in honor of the Rugby World Cup-winning South African soccer captain.
