Biography
Die Heuwels Fantasties, an Afrikaans electro-pop quartet linked to key figures across the South African music landscape including Fokofpolisiekar, Lukraaketaar, aKING, Thieve, and Die Gevaar, surfaced in 2007. Their breakthrough arrived in 2011 through the chart-topping second album Wilder As Die Wildtuin, after which projects such as 2017's Okay! steered them toward a warmer, more nostalgic pop approach rooted in acoustic textures.
Established that same year in Bellville, a suburb of Cape Town, the group consists of Hunter Kennedy, Pierre Greeff, Fred den Hartog, and Sheldon Yoko. They issued their self-titled debut on the Supra Familias imprint run by Kennedy and Greeff in 2009. This energetic fusion of electro-pop and alternative rock drew input from Francois Van Coke of Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel, Laudo Liebenberg of aKING, Adriaan Brand of Springbok Nude Girls, Neil Basson of Foto na Dans, and Jack Parow. The following year brought the hit single "Doodegewone Aand," featured on the soundtrack for the Afrikaans comedy Bakgat 2. In 2011 the band delivered its award-winning follow-up, Wilder As Die Wildtuin. Representing their first complete group recording, unlike the debut which centered mainly on Kennedy and Greeff, the fourteen-song collection pursued a classic pop/rock direction filled with memorable hooks and introspective lyrics reflecting South African youth. Later gold-certified releases such as Alles Wat Mal in 2012, Ja. Nee. Lekker in 2014, and Okay! in 2017 sustained that trajectory, cementing Die Heuwels Fantasties among the era's leading Afrikaans pop acts.
