Biography
Prime Circle, a highly regarded rock outfit from South Africa, arrived on the music landscape in 2002, delivering a powerful yet flexible sound that fused post-grunge textures, expansive arena ballads, hip-hop rhythms, and expansive alternative rock dynamics. Immediate commercial traction followed the release of their first album, Hello Crazy World, which earned platinum status thanks to multiple singles that dominated the national charts for extended periods. Further growth came in 2008 when the group reached listeners in England and Europe via their third album, All or Nothing, issued worldwide through EMI. Additional projects, including the gold- and platinum-certified Jekyll & Hyde from 2010 and If You Don't You Never Will in 2017, reinforced their standing within South Africa’s varied rock environment.
The ensemble originated in 2001 in the mining city of Witbank, inking a deal the next year with the South African indie label David Gresham Records and unveiling their debut full-length, Hello Crazy World, in 2002. With Ross Learmonth handling vocals and guitar alongside Marco Gomes on bass, Dale Schnettler on drums, Dirk Bisschoff on lead guitar, and Neil Breytenbach on keyboards, they issued one further record via that imprint—2005’s Live This Life—prior to signing with EMI. The 2008 platinum release All or Nothing, propelled by the successes “She Always Gets What She Wants” and “Consider Me,” captured two South African Music Awards and broadened the band’s reach beyond domestic borders. Jekyll & Hyde from 2010 matched that commercial performance, as the track “Breathing” claimed the top radio position nationwide, a feat repeated by Evidence in 2012, which also secured record of the year honors at the 2012 SAMA ceremony. Their sixth studio album, Let the Night In, appeared in 2014 on the band’s own imprint, accompanied by a tour that introduced them to audiences in Italy, Spain, and France. Two chart-topping singles, “The Gift” and “Pretty Like the Sun,” arrived in 2017 on the long-player If You Don't You Never Will. Two years afterward, Prime Circle put out the live collection Live World, assembling 25 performances drawn from shows across multiple continents.
