Biography
Formed in Paarl, South Africa, the award-winning Afrikaans outfit Spoegwolf—whose name means “Spitwolf”—surfaced in the early 2010s, fusing melody-driven alternative rock propulsion with introspective folk-pop sensibilities. Their 2019 breakthrough arrived via the fourth album, the trauma-centered concept record Koma, which propelled them to the summit of the digital streaming charts as the first Afrikaans band ever to achieve that milestone.
The quartet, which came together in 2012, features Moskou du Toit on drums, percussion, and vocals, Chris von Wielligh handling guitar and piano, Albert van der Merwe on bass and vocals, and Danie du Toit delivering vocals and guitar. Their debut release that same year, Swaartekrag, contained two signature tracks, “Lenie Blou” and “Somerset-Wes,” and subsequent well-received full-lengths followed: Somer in 2014, Die Donker Toring in 2017, Koma in 2019, and See in 2020, the last of which marked their inaugural European tour.
