Biography
German DJ and producer Robert Dietz crafts house and techno that balances technical precision with hypnotic, playful, and occasionally whimsical qualities. Several tech-house and minimal techno releases surfaced in 2008, among them The Green Light EP, and further output on Cadenza, Running Back, and Desolat followed as his reputation grew and he shifted his base from Frankfurt to Berlin. Over time the material took on greater melodic warmth and gleeful humor while also exposing an experimental streak, most clearly on the 2020 release MySpace. The ambitious sound of 2024’s 3 Mirrors draws from progressive house and IDM.
Born in Frankfurt, Dietz first gained attention through 2008 records that included The Green Light EP on Deep Vibes, Jaszu on Cécille Numbers, and The Education of Mischief EP on Be Chosen, alongside numerous European club dates. Forward Snipping arrived in 2009 as his initial Running Back outing, after which Cadenza and Saved Records hosted further material in the early 2010s. The double-CD mix Arkitekt.01 appeared in 2012, and Common EP, his second Running Back release, followed in 2013. After the move to Berlin, additional records came out on Desolat, Viva Music, and Truth Be Told. The sound grew noticeably more playful and departed from its earlier minimal focus. Entering the next decade he issued tracks under the aliases DJ Discipline, DJ Meme Generator, and Oxy-Moron, while continuing to release under his own name with 2019’s Great Hormones at Bedtime on Misfit Melodies. The 2020 EP MySpace on Dissolute ventured further into abstraction than his typical club-oriented work. Schnups EP landed on Live at Robert Johnson in 2021, and the 2023 Nous’klaer Audio release RIP to My Idea of You adopted a larger, more openly expressive character. Rejuve-Nation on Running Back and 3 Mirrors on Nous’klaer Audio, both issued in 2024, pointed toward trance and ambient techno.
