American Robin Beck, who had served as a background vocalist for performers like Melissa Manchester, Chaka Khan, and Leo Sayer, reached the top of the charts briefly in both the U.K. and Germany with 1988's "The First Time," a track featured in a Coca-Cola commercial. Her next album, Trouble or Nothin' (1989), attracted little attention even with contributions by veteran songwriters Desmond Child and Diane Warren. The singles from it also struggled, since "Save Up All Your Tears" had already been popularized by Cher, and "Tears in the Rain" would later be covered more successfully by Jennifer Rush five years afterward. In 1992 Beck issued her second album, on which the single "In My Heart to Stay" achieved modest success in Germany. Publicity spots for a major fast-food chain featured her 1994 song "Close to You."
