Rocket Juice & the Moon took shape as the joint endeavor of Damon Albarn, Tony Allen, and Flea after the three first crossed paths aboard a flight bound for Lagos in 2008, where they were scheduled to contribute to Albarn’s Africa Express project. Their shared sensibilities prompted immediate discussion of a future recording session, and by the close of 2010 the material for a debut album was essentially complete. The trio stepped onstage together for the first time nearly twelve months afterward, appearing in October 2011 at Ireland’s Cork Jazz Festival and, days later, at Another Honest Jon’s Chop-Up—an event honoring the record store and label co-owned by Albarn. Chicago’s Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Detroit DJ Theo Parrish, and Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara joined them for those performances; all except Parrish later appeared on the record, alongside Erykah Badu and West African rapper M.anifest. The self-titled album reached stores in March 2012 via Honest Jon’s Records.
