Roger Espinoza devoted extensive time to perfecting his technique on the Spanish nylon guitar, which helped him emerge as a prominent figure among Los Angeles session players and independent recording artists. Although born in Granada, Nicaragua, he grew up in Los Angeles and has remained there ever since. His father, a pianist, provided his earliest musical guidance, prompting Espinoza to begin private instruction while still young. He started on trombone before shifting his focus to the Spanish nylon guitar. Years of dedicated practice led him to study under Costa Rican guitarist Jorge Strunz, known for his work with Strunz & Farah, as well as under noted flamenco performer Gino Di Auri. Through this training he acquired command of rumba and flamenco on the instrument and developed the ability to sing in both styles as well. Those skills opened doors to live appearances and studio work, including contributions to Luis Villegas’ Cafe Ole and K.C.’s Aqui Estamos Todos. Espinoza then launched his own recording path with the debut album Café Fuego, issued by New World Music. The release highlights his guitar mastery alongside an array of traditional instruments such as the cajon, dumbec, and snake cocoon eggs.
