Biography
Latin Grammy recipient Vicente García possesses an inherently reedy yet crystalline tenor, and his work spans breezy sophisticated tropical pop, acoustic balladry, Latin soul, and electro textures. Although he first secured professional standing as lead vocalist for Calor Urbano, García’s solo output later expanded from the pop ballads, merengue, and bachata of his initial release to the scorching tropical fusion heard on 2016’s Melodrama.
Vicente Luis García Luis Guillén entered the world in Santo Domingo in 1983 and began performing as a member of the funk-soul group Calor Urbano, which earned him substantial regional recognition. Following an eight-year tenure with that ensemble, he initiated his solo path in 2011 by issuing Melodrama. The recording established him among leading contemporary bachata and bolero artists, a standing further cemented in 2013 when “Te Soñé” became a viral hit single. After signing with Sony Music, García reached major-league status in Latin music via A la Mar (2016). Eduardo “Visitante” Cabra of Calle 13 produced the project, which received three Latin Grammys for Best Singer/Songwriter Album, Best New Artist, and Best Tropical Song for “Bachata en Kingston.”
During 2018 García and Visitante formed the duo Trending Topics and delivered the full-length album of the same name, led by the 196 BPM electro merengue single “Elintelné.” Fabrice Dupont handled production on the set, which also featured contributions from Ziggy Marley, Li Saumet of Bomba Estéreo, Pucho of the Spanish indie rock band Vetusta Morla, traditional Afro-Colombian vocalist Nidia Góngora, and iLe (Ileana Mercedes Cabra Joglar)—Cabra’s sister and a ten-year member of Calle 13.
