Biography
Romanowski, the San Francisco DJ, traces his first steps into that world to covert raids on his mother’s liquor cabinet and record shelves. What began with alcohol alongside Beatles LPs soon shifted toward old-school rap and early electronica, sounds he began blending at fourteen in Zurich, Switzerland, the city where he was born. After relocating to San Francisco in 1992, he quickly connected with the Behind the Post Office collective, the circle of DJs and rappers centered on the Behind the Post Office record store. One early-career peak came when he shared bills with Meat Beat Manifesto and Thievery Corporation, plus DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist, during the celebrated inaugural Brainfreeze show. On his debut album, Steady Rocking, issued by Future Primitive Sound, the DJ revealed his affinity for Jamaica’s rocksteady music refracted through buoyant electronics. Beyond recording, Romanowski maintains ties to the Curators collective as a visual artist whose pieces have appeared in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Los Angeles, and Seattle’s more adventurous galleries.
