Biography
Ron Holloway emerged as a tenor saxophonist of considerable skill and broad curiosity, earning his strongest recognition through hard bop–centered performances and recordings. He first took up music while in seventh grade. Early professional work found him in R&B and funk groups, where he also shared stages with Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard, and Dizzy Gillespie. Between 1981 and 1988 he performed regularly alongside Gil Scott-Heron; afterward, his sound showing clear echoes of Stanley Turrentine, he joined Dizzy Gillespie’s final ensemble and remained until the trumpeter’s passing in 1992. Several albums under his own name have appeared on the Milestone label.
