Roupa Nova emerged as a ballroom ensemble that cultivated such a strong identity they began staging their own productions at the events where they had been booked to appear. With exceptional skill in the ballroom format, the ensemble presents a simple yet engaging variety of soft pop that prioritizes enjoyment. Originally assembled in 1970 under the name Os Famks, the musicians issued multiple recordings both in that guise and as Os Motokas. By 1980 the collective had taken the name Roupa Nova after a composition by Milton Nascimento and Fernando Brant that they committed to disc during the same period. In addition, the musicians provide backing for prominent performers including Zizi Possi, Roberto Carlos, Fafá de Belém, Gal Costa, and Milton Nascimento. Among their most successful releases stand "Canção de Verão" (Luiz Guedes/Thomas Roth), "Clarear" (Octávio Bournier/Mariozinho Rocha), "Whisky A Go-Go" (Michael Sullivan/Paulo Massadas), "Sapato Velho" (Mu/Cláudio Nucci/Paulinho Tapajós), "Dona" (Sá/Guarabyra), and "Coração Pirata" (Aldir Blanc/Nando). Between 1980 and 2001 the outfit produced 15 albums, and they maintain an active schedule of live appearances.
