Volatile and explosively melodic, the Australian outfit Royal Headache fused garage punk with generous helpings of 1960s AM radio soul-pop. Operating intermittently from 2008 until 2017, the group issued two albums—the self-titled debut in 2011 and the final statement High in 2015—while earning a fierce reputation for their electrifying concerts across Europe and the United States. Fronted by Shogun’s soulful screams and propelled by ramped-up yet tuneful compositions, the band shone intensely and left an enduring mark, one that resurfaced in 2024 with the archival release Live in America.

Emerging from Sydney’s Western suburbs and their austere punk underbelly, Royal Headache formed in 2008. Partly reacting against the dour post-punk acts prevalent then, the quartet broadened its approach with abundant melody and unexpected Motown touches. Using abbreviated monikers, the original lineup featured Shogun on vocals, Joe on bass, Shortty on drums, and Law on guitar. A self-produced 7-inch quickly earned local attention and gigs followed. In 2011 the band delivered its debut LP on R.I.P. Society, recorded with Mikey Young—foundational figure in the Australian punk community and constant member of Eddy Current Suppression Ring. The resulting set of hook-laden, punk-inflected power soul drew widespread underground acclaim, expanding the group’s reach. Subsequent European and American tours ensued, and early in 2012 What’s Your Rupture? reissued the album stateside. Further momentum arrived through accumulating praise and an Australian run supporting the Black Keys. Exhaustion from constant travel prompted Shogun’s exit in 2013; during the hiatus Joe joined Bed Wetting Bad Boys while Shogun handled guitar for Low Life. The members later regrouped for select performances, among them a charged evening at Sydney’s Royal Opera House, and began shaping their follow-up. Drawing on material initiated around the first album’s release, they enlisted Gabrielle De Giorgio for keyboard parts and broadened their sonic palette. High appeared in late August 2015, again via What’s Your Rupture?. Enthusiastic responses from listeners and writers alike prompted roughly another year of touring before the band fractured once more. Attempts to continue with replacement personnel proved short-lived, and Royal Headache dissolved for good in 2017. Individual members pursued separate endeavors as the group’s absence only heightened appreciation for its catalog. In 2024 What’s Yr Rupture? issued Live in America, compiling 2012 recordings from New Jersey’s WFMU and 2015 performances at Chicago’s Empty Bottle.
